The Pedigree: For the students at the "outlying" Ivies—Hanover, Ithaca, and West Philadelphia—the Langrock experience arrived twice a year in a series of heavy leather trunks. These were the "Road Men," the legendary traveling tailors who turned hotel suites into temporary Nassau Street annexes. The Ancient Madder was their most coveted cargo—a tie that looked as if it had already lived a lifetime of library sessions and autumn Saturdays.

The Fabric: True Ancient Madder is a dying art. The silk was originally printed in Macclesfield, England, using the traditional "gum madder" process. This created the signature "chalky" or "dusty" hand-feel and a completely matte finish that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. The colors are deep, saturated, and "ancient"—Mustard Gold, Madder Red, and Indigo—featuring the classic geometric "teardrop" and "rhombus" patterns from the 1954 Langrock archive.

The Construction:

  • Soft-Hand Interlining: To match the relaxed, "crinkled" nature of the madder silk, we use a lightweight, brushed wool interlining. This allows the tie to drape with a soft, natural curve.
  • Hand-Slip Stitched: Every "Road Man" Madder is hand-sewn in Los Angeles with a functional "slip stitch," allowing the silk to move and stretch without losing its shape over decades of wear.
  • The Archive Label: Featuring the original Gothic-script "Langrock" woven label, a mark of authenticity recognized from the North Woods to the Deep South.

The Legacy: The Ancient Madder is not a "dressy" tie. It is a rugged, intellectual staple. It is the only tie that looks better the more it is knotted, unknotted, and tossed over a chair at the end of a long day.
